Amidst the poverty of early 20th century Chicago, Bill and Abby pretend to be sisters to survive. They escape to Texas and work on a farm, where the owner—a rich, terminally ill farmer—falls in love with Abby. Seeing an opportunity, the two plan a scam to inherit his fortune. However, when death never comes, jealousy and impatience trigger an inevitable disaster.
