Amid the frenzied preparations for D-Day 1944, Lieutenant Commander Charles Madison (James Garner) is the personification of the American soldier who is "too hot, too rich, and too here" for the British. An expert at avoiding risks, his life changes when he falls in love with Emily Barham (Julie Andrews), an idealistic English woman. However, when his commander suffers a mental breakdown, Charles is entangled in an absurdly dangerous mission.
